... and we're off!!

It is safe to say that marathon season is sprouting. People are out on the path building their base, itching for those long group runs to start. Most programs are 18 to 21 weeks in length, which means tomorrow is the eve of my 21 week program kick off. Personally, my favorite part of training are those long Saturday morning runs. There is something special about everyone who gathers together. Everyone sparkles with the same anticipation of what lies ahead. There is a camaraderie that we have; we are going to run a marathon (or half marathon) this summer! My running friends are different from the rest. I love that no one has to explain why we run and why we are obsessed. They just get it. The friends I made while training last year makes me excited for the friendship possibilities of this year.

Another advantage of the Saturday morning runs is the timing. I love being on the path while the sun comes up over the lake. The morning is so quiet at that time of the day. There is something magical about it. I don’t know if it is the expectancy of what the day will bring, or knowing that the whole city is asleep while I am taking advantage of the empty path! :)

My excitement comes with some suspense. I am stronger this year than I was last year and more knowledgeable of what is to come. I have learned how to listen to my body and I understand when it is telling me something. Even though I know I am strong, I am nervous. What if my worst nightmare comes true and for the second year in a row, I have to drop out? As these thoughts creep up, I have to ease them away because I am ready.
